Sefton Coast Partnership

Sefton Coast Forum 2003

The Sefton Coast Forum 2003 was held on Saturday 8th February at the Civic Hall, Crosby. There was an excellent attendance with people having to be turned away due to a last minute (and unplanned) announcement of the forum on local radio.

The event was opened by the Mayor of Sefton Cllr Kevin Cluskey followed by a series of rapid-fire presentations by local site managers (RSPB, English Nature, National Trust and Sefton) illustrating some of the work of the partnership.

The main presentations dealt with issues 'beyond the boundaries' but nevertheless of direct relevance to the Partnership - Louise Hopkins, director of the Mersey Waterfront Regional Park illustrated how the Park proposals relate to the Sefton Coast, and Chris Lumb of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee explained the background to the Irish Sea Regional Seas Pilot. This is a government-funded project looking at how nature conservation legislation can be extended to cover marine areas, using the Irish Sea as a 'test-bed'. Andy Plater, a geomorphologist from Liverpool University, tackled the issue of getting better connections between coastal research, and on-the-ground management.

Workshops on Access & Interpretation, History and Archaeology, Shoreline Management, and Research & Management were led by Task Group Chairs and dealt with issues arising out of the work of the relevant task groups. Reports on the workshops have been prepared and will be edited in a report on the Forum to be published in due course.

There was a feeling among delegates that the importance of issues now developing on the coast in the Sefton area needed more space for discussion. As a result next year's Forum is being planned as a full day event. It is also intended to produce a conference report for each Forum, if we can find some sponsorship to assist with the annual publication costs.
