Sefton Coast Partnership

Sefton Coast Forum 2004

The 2004 Annual Coastal Forum of the Sefton Coast Partnership was held at The Gild Hall, Church Road, Formby on Saturday 7 February. The forum was opened by The Mayor of Sefton Cllr David Pearson and following feedback from previous years' it was an all day event. It was well attended by the local public, community groups, businesses, and various organisations.

The event was chaired by Mr Ted Jackson, and the morning sessions were taken up with presentations followed by a question and answer session. The presentations were given by Ceri Jones (Planning & Economic Regeneration Directorate, Sefton Council) who talked about the Partnership's Annual Report and gave a general update on this and the Mersey Waterfront Regional Park. Dr Phil Smith (author of Sands of Time) spoke about Nature Conservation - examining changing patterns of flora and fauna over different timescales on the Sefton Coast. There was a joint presentation on access and the need for visitor facilities including a discussion on the North West Coastal Trail concept presented by Andrew Brockbank (National Trust), Dave McAleavy, (Sefton Coast and Countryside Service) and Caroline Salthouse (North West Coastal Forum) and a presentation given by Dr Reg Yorke, Chair of History and Archaeology Task Group, about Coastal Heritage and included details of the heritage coast bid and a forthcoming coastal heritage conference which is planned for September 2004.

The afternoon session consisted of four breakout workshops followed by brief presentations of their conclusions to the forum. The four workshops were:

  • The Future Red Squirrel Conservation
  • Access and the need for visitor facilities
  • Interpretation and Information
  • Coastal Heritage

The feedback form questionnaires handed out at this year's event will be taken on board for the 2005 Forum. Proceedings of the forum are to be published shortly and will be available on the Partnership website.
