Sefton Coast Partnership

Sefton Coast Forum 2007

The 8th Annual Sefton Coast Forum 'People, Places and Nature' took place on Saturday 7th July 2007 at the Floral Hall Southport. This was the first time this all day event had taken place in the summer. It was well attended and proved a great success.

The Mayor of Sefton Cllr Richard Hands opened the forum and as part of his duties he presented the Sefton Coast Partnership Volunteer Award. This award is open to anyone wishing to nominate someone they think has done valuable work on the coast. From the nominations received this year the Board agreed two awards should be made. In recognition of their outstanding contribution over many years the awards were presented to Dr Reg Yorke and Mr. Ted Marshall.

The day was split with presentations in the morning and then workshops in the afternoon following a 'free' buffet lunch.

The morning session comprised a series of informative presentations. The keynote address was given by Pam Warhurst Natural England, followed by a presentation by Andrew Hall| on the Integrated Management Plan and the Partnership's Annual Report for 2006 involving the work of the partnership carried out in the previous year and a review of the activities for the coming year. John Houston presented the launch of the Nature Conservation Strategy. Copies of the draft strategy, open for public consultation until 31 August, have been placed in every library and here on the website. John Houston then followed this by an announcement of a new project about landscape, conservation, heritage and people and how the Partnership had been successful in being awarded a 'Planning Grant' by Heritage Lottery Fund for the development of a full application for a Landscape Partnership Scheme. Ian Rowlands from the Environment Agency gave a very topical presentation on flood risk and with outline proposals to manage flood risk in certain parts of the catchment area. Then followed a question and answer session from the floor to all presenters. The morning session was wrapped up by a lively and exciting DVD presentation on 'Sustainable Sands' presented by Formby High School.

The afternoon Workshops discussed the Sefton Coast Woodlands Forest Plan 5 year Review, National Archaeology Week, Sharing Wildlife Knowledge and Improving Physical Access. Reports on the Workshops have been prepared and will be edited in the Forum proceedings to be published on the website in due course.
