Current Research
Title Biodiversity of Birkdale Green Beach
Undertaken by Dr. P.H. Smith
Project Description
Originating in 1986, the Birkdale Green Beach has grown exponentially to a current area of over 62ha, consisting of pioneer sand-dune, dune-slack and salt-marsh habitats which are otherwise poorly represented on the Sefton dune coast. The site is a “hotspot” for biodiversity on the coast, including, to date, 264 vascular plant taxa of which 42 are nationally or regionally notable. There are two nationally rare mosses, about 150 pairs of Natterjack Toads, several breeding birds listed as of conservation concern and a great, though largely unexplored, diversity of invertebrates. The project, ongoing for nearly 20 years, seeks to record site biodiversity and change of both habitats and species with time
