Title
An inventory of vascular plants for the Sefton Coast

Undertaken by
Dr. P.H. Smith

Project Description
Since 1999, an attempt has been made to record all vascular taxa (species, sub-species and hybrids) reliably identified on the Sefton Coast and on the sand-dune system. Two unpublished reports detailing the results have been submitted to the Sefton Coast Partnership (1999, 2005), the second one being summarised in BSBI News no.102, April 2006, pp. 4-9 The latter shows that 1177 taxa have been recorded in the coastal zone and 1055 in the dune system. This is more the half the entire South Lancashire vice-county flora and confirms that the Sefton Coast has the highest plant diversity of any comparable area in Northwest England. The project is ongoing and in 2006, around six new taxa have been added and three thought to be extinct have been rediscovered.
