Foredune Survey
The foredune is surveyed to record the position of the front of the sand dunes, these surveys are repeated every other month. The area surveyed runs from Hoggs Hill Lane, Ravenmeols to Shore Road, Ainsdale. The survey is conducted using a Geographical Positioning System (GPS) which uses several satellites to provide location details to sub-metre accuracy.
The information gathered allows us to observe seasonal changes and the effects of individual storms. The information is typically expressed as an average rate of accretion or erosion for a particular location although throughout the year the location of the foot of the sand dune may have moved both in and out.
