Informal Rubble as a Coastal Defence

Informal Rubble at Hightown Copyright Paul WisseFor rubble to act as a coastal defence it needs to work in the same way as rock armour, but the nature of rubble is that you cannot specify what you get so it will not work as well as rock armour. It does provide some level of defence as it is permeable and will dissapate some of the energy of the waves.

This type of defence can be seen on the stretch of coastline from Crosby (Hall Road West) to Hightown. The rubble is derived from World War Two bomb damaged buildings in Liverpool. One of the aspects that is interesting to look at is the way in which the bricks have been rounded by the action of the sea.
