Shoreline Management

Policies - Shoreline Management Plans

Studies

During the Shoreline Management Plan preparation a number of gaps were identified in existing knowledge, these need to be addressed in order to inform the update and review of the Shoreline Management Plans. These studies can be split into national, regional and local studies.

National

Following completion of the SMPs a common requirement in many of them around the English and Welsh coastline was an updating of geomorphological data. A study to address this was commissioned by Defra and completed in 2002. Referred to as the Futurecoast project it brings together existing information in a common format and provides generic predictions in relation to future coastal evolution. This provides a common baseline from which to review future SMPs.

Regional

There are four regional studies for the North West area:

Extreme Water Level Predictions - given the infrequent nature of extreme water levels it can be difficult to define them with associated return periods. The Environment Agency are refining current predictions which will assist in the assessment of risk and design of schemes.

Wave and Water Level Joint Probability - as with extreme water level predictions the joint probability of extreme wave and water levels occurring concurrently is difficult to predict. However, this information is important when considering coastal defence schemes, as damaging events typically occur when there is a combination of extreme water levels combined with storm conditions, high winds and low pressure.

Tidal Flows - Tidal current behavior is not very well defined with little specific data avaliable for the inshore area. This information is fundamental to obtaining a better understanding of sediment movement.

Sediment Movement Definition - at present the information relating to sediment movement is largely qualitative, providing movement directions rather than quantities. Whilst it is not considered possible to quantify sediment movement to a high level of accuracy it is considered possible to improve substantially on the current level of understanding.

Local

Crosby to Formby Point Strategy Study - a strategy study provides a framework for developing, appraising and implementing flood and coastal defence works in a logical manner where the area to be studied is complicated with a variety of problems and linkages to be addressed. This study will provide a plan that details the generic approach to coastal defence to be undertaken and the appropriate timings or intervention points.
