Teachers - Pre-visit
Proper planning of a visit to the coast can make your trip much more rewarding and stimulating, as well as ensuring that it passes without any problems.
Your first step should be to decide what the reasons for your visit to the coast are, as they will influence the site(s) and timings of your visit.
Once you know what you wish to achieve on your visit you should contact the relevant site's education officer to discuss your visit and book it in (visits not booked in maybe refused entry). Officers will be able to advise the best sites to visit to meet your requirements and site regulations.
Site staff may be available to lead a visit to their site but this will need to be pre-arranged as the staff have many other duties and commitments.
Evidence of insurance and signing of indemnity forms may be necessary (site staff will be able to advise).
If you wish to take samples from the sites you will need to obtain formal permissions. Education officers/site staff will be able to give advice.
A visit to the chosen site(s) should be made prior to bringing out groups. NB not all sites have toilet and/or picnic facilities on site.
Advise students/group members of appropriate kit e.g. waterproofs, sun block, drinks, lunch, appropriate footware etc.
Check tide times (7 days,
2 months) prior to visit .
Work sheets and site leaflets may be available - education officers/site staff will be able to advise on availability.
Carefully plan your transport to the relevant site(s). Most sites are easily accessible by rail and car. Some sites charge for parking - education officers/site staff will be able to advise on this.
